relay-recorded MP4: recover after a quick format

Can clips split across two card slots be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often yes, if you check both cards: formatting one card leaves the other untouched unless both were formatted, and it may still hold the continuation of the relay recording. Eject the formatted card without testing, scan it read-only, and pair its recovered part with the second card's file by recording time.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous clips split across two card slots is missing.

The format hit one card, not the pair. The other slot still holds its part of the take in a normal folder, so half the recording needs no recovery. Check both cards before starting, because the formatted one alone decides how much work is really ahead.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A quick format wrote a new exFAT directory on that card, leaving the video blocks in place but losing names and folders. In a relay set this gives an odd picture: one part of the take shows up normally on the untouched card, while its continuation has to be recovered nameless and matched back by recording time.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For relay-recorded MP4, this matters because a recording may continue on another card while numbering and metadata span both slots

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the formatted card without making a test recording, and leave the second card in its case for now.

  2. 2

Copy the surviving part from the untouched card first, and write down its start time, its duration and its file number.

  3. 3

Scan the formatted card read-only and export the recovered clips to an internal drive, not back onto either card.

  4. 4

Pair the nameless export with the intact part by recording time and length, then lay both on a timeline in order.

Avoid this now

Do not format the second card as well to keep the media consistent, and do not put a test clip on the formatted one. Writing exported files back onto the card being scanned covers exactly the area the remaining parts still occupy.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads the formatted exFAT card read-only and exports the clips still readable there, but names and folder paths went with the directory. The part on the untouched card is a plain copy, and anything written over since the format is beyond recovery.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Together the two parts should add up to the length of the original take, with the recovered clip starting where the intact one stops. Check the seam frame by frame and listen across it: a missing or doubled second means the wrong recovered file was paired up.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can dual-slot exFAT camera media be recovered in this situation?+

The format hit one card, not the pair. The other slot still holds its part of the take in a normal folder, so half the recording needs no recovery. Check both cards before starting, because the formatted one alone decides how much work is really ahead. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not format the second card as well to keep the media consistent, and do not put a test clip on the formatted one.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Together the two parts should add up to the length of the original take, with the recovered clip starting where the intact one stops.
