Recover deleted Canon video: MP4, XFVC, or MXF

How can I recover deleted Canon camera video?

Short answer

First identify what your Canon records: ordinary MP4 or MOV, XFVC with linked header and media data, or MXF. The right scan depends on it. Remove the card, scan read-only for that recording family and validate cautiously; for MXF, contiguous clips are detected, but not every OP-1a index or footer is rebuilt.

The situation

Canon clips were deleted or their entries disappeared after an ingest problem.

Canon spans three recording worlds under one brand. Hybrid bodies write ordinary MP4 or MOV, some Cinema EOS models write XFVC with header and media data in separate files, and broadcast bodies write MXF. Which of them produced these clips decides the whole approach.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Clips vanish either through in-camera deletion or because an ingest tool moved them and its database lost track of the result. The card itself usually still holds the media blocks. What changes with the recording family is how a clip has to be reassembled: an MP4 needs its moov and mdat together, an XFVC clip needs a matching DAT extent, and MXF needs partition keys.

Depending on the camera, the card may contain ordinary MP4/MOV, Canon XFVC-linked data, or MXF extents.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Stop recording, power the camera down, and take the card out before the body writes a new clip number or repairs its folder structure.

  2. 2

Identify the recording family from what remains on the card, whether plain MP4 files, XFVC folders with DAT data, or MXF clip folders.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only for exactly that container, using the Canon profile where the material is XFVC rather than plain MP4.

  4. 4

Export to a separate disk and load every clip into the software you will actually cut in, not only into a quick preview player.

Avoid this now

Do not let the camera repair or initialise the card, and do not delete the remaining clip folders to free space. Avoid transcoding a recovered clip before it has been checked, because a proxy can play smoothly while the source stops short.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Contiguous clips are found reliably, while fragmented MXF or an OP-1a footer that was never written may stay unusable, and File Recovery Hero rebuilds neither. It reads exFAT, NTFS, and FAT cards read-only and does not repair individual damaged video files.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Treat a clip as recovered when it opens in the editor with the expected duration, with video and audio streams both present, and with playback that reaches the final second. For MXF, compare timecode and clip length against the shot list, since a rebuilt index can still be partial.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Canon exFAT video card be recovered in this situation?+

Canon spans three recording worlds under one brand. Hybrid bodies write ordinary MP4 or MOV, some Cinema EOS models write XFVC with header and media data in separate files, and broadcast bodies write MXF. Which of them produced these clips decides the whole approach. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the camera repair or initialise the card, and do not delete the remaining clip folders to free space.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Treat a clip as recovered when it opens in the editor with the expected duration, with video and audio streams both present, and with playback that reaches the final second.
