podcast production: card appears empty after the shoot

What should I do when a card from the podcast production appears empty?

Short answer

First check the recorder itself: many podcast recorders keep each session in its own project folder, so the files may sit somewhere you did not expect. Stop recording, label the card and do not let the recorder rebuild or format it. If the card really stays empty, scan it read-only for WAV.

The situation

At least one card from the podcast production no longer shows the expected recordings.

An empty card after a podcast session is a reading problem far more often than a data problem. Field recorders hide takes in per-session project folders, and a directory the recorder cannot parse shows the same blank list as a card that really was formatted.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Multitrack recorders create a folder per project or per date and show only the current one on their own display, so a session started under a different project name looks like nothing at all. Card rotation between two recorders, a card formatted at the start of the day by habit, and a directory damaged by removing the card before the file was closed all end in the same empty view.

Card rotation, accidental formatting, a damaged directory or the wrong physical card can produce the same symptom. For podcast production, this matters because the podcast production combines several sources, takes and handoff steps that must be reconciled as a set

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Take the card out of the recorder immediately and stop recording on that device; if it is a full-size SD card, set the write-protect switch.

  2. 2

Read the card in a computer instead of the recorder display and look through every project folder, including hidden ones, before drawing any conclusion.

  3. 3

If the folders really are gone, scan the card read-only for WAV takes and let the session run to the end instead of stopping at the first hits.

  4. 4

Export the recovered takes to a computer drive, rename them by speaker and date, and only then put a freshly formatted card back into the recorder.

Avoid this now

Do not accept the recorder's offer to repair, initialise or rebuild the card, and do not record a test take to prove the slot still works. Both actions write new management data over the entries that point to your session.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A card that the computer no longer recognises at all, or one the recorder has already formatted and recorded over, is beyond a read-only scan. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT and FAT32 cards on macOS and Windows; scanning is free, exporting needs a licence.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A take is intact when its running time matches the session length, every microphone channel is present rather than only the stereo mix, and playback holds from the first minute to the last without the silence that marks a truncated WAV.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can podcast production cards and drives be recovered in this situation?+

An empty card after a podcast session is a reading problem far more often than a data problem. Field recorders hide takes in per-session project folders, and a directory the recorder cannot parse shows the same blank list as a card that really was formatted. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not accept the recorder's offer to repair, initialise or rebuild the card, and do not record a test take to prove the slot still works.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
