Ogg/Opus recording: recover after an interrupted recording

What can I do with Ogg or Opus recordings after a recording interruption?

Short answer

Usually playable up to the break: Ogg stores audio in self-contained pages, so an interrupted recording plays until its last complete page, even without a proper end-of-stream flag. Copy the file first. If a player shows a wrong duration, remux the copy with an Ogg tool to rebuild a clean final page.

The situation

Ogg or Opus recordings is missing, too short or unreadable after power loss, a card error or an unsafe stop.

The recording stopped abruptly and the stream was never closed properly, so the last page carries no end-of-stream flag. Ogg tolerates this well, because the audio sits in self-contained pages that decoders read one after another without needing a table at the start or the end.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

An unfinished Ogg file lacks only its final marker and, in many cases, a granule position that would state the true total length. The pages written before the interruption remain valid and decode normally. Some players nevertheless show a wrong duration or refuse to seek, because they expect a properly terminated stream and take the length from the last page.

The payload may have been written before duration fields, indexes, directory entries or closing structures were committed. For Ogg/Opus recording, this matters because Ogg pages, serial numbers and granule positions order compressed Opus packets

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Power the device down cleanly, take the card out and start no new recording in the same folder.

  2. 2

Copy the unfinished file onto a computer drive and leave the original on the card exactly as it is.

  3. 3

Play the copy to the end to hear how far the recording got, before any tool changes the file.

  4. 4

Remux the copy with an Ogg tool so the stream gets a proper closing page and a correct duration.

Avoid this now

Do not let a tagging program write into the unfinished file on the card, and do not resume the session on that card. A write into a stream whose last page is incomplete can invalidate the page that still holds the closing seconds of the recording.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Rebuilding a closing page is file repair on a copy, done with an Ogg tool. File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card and exports the files it finds there; it does not write granule positions, close streams or replace pages the interruption left half finished.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

After remuxing, the duration shown should match the audio you heard, and seeking should work across the whole recording. Check the final seconds in particular: a cut-off last page can disappear during the remux, which costs a fraction of a second and is normal for an interrupted take.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT audio media be recovered in this situation?+

The recording stopped abruptly and the stream was never closed properly, so the last page carries no end-of-stream flag. Ogg tolerates this well, because the audio sits in self-contained pages that decoders read one after another without needing a table at the start or the end. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let a tagging program write into the unfinished file on the card, and do not resume the session on that card.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

After remuxing, the duration shown should match the audio you heard, and seeking should work across the whole recording.
