Lightroom Classic: files missing after import

Where are the originals after an import into Lightroom Classic?

Short answer

Usually at the import destination: Lightroom Classic's Copy, Copy as DNG and Move options all place files in the destination folder, and Move also removes them from the card. Add leaves files where they were. Check which option was used, the destination folder and the trash, then scan the card read-only if Move emptied it.

The situation

The import looked successful, but some or all originals later disappeared in Lightroom Classic.

Four import options behave in four different ways, and only one of them takes the photographs off the card. Which button was pressed at import decides whether a second copy exists, so that question comes before any search or scan.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Add keeps the photos where they are and only catalogs them, which is invisible until the card is formatted. Copy and Copy as DNG write a second set into the destination folder, where a full disk or a cancelled import can leave the set incomplete. Move deletes each file from the card once it has been written, so an interruption there loses both sides at once.

Copy, move, rename and catalog steps can complete at different times. For Lightroom Classic, this matters because Lightroom Classic can keep references or helper media without containing a complete independent original

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the memory card and keep it out of the camera, whatever the import dialog reported when it finished its run.

  2. 2

Find out from the catalog which import option was used and where its destination folder lies, then count the files there against the shoot.

  3. 3

Check the system trash and any backup of the destination before scanning, because a restore keeps the raw file and its sidecar intact.

  4. 4

If a move emptied the card, scan it read-only, export the raws to a drive with space and import that copy again with the copy option.

Avoid this now

Do not run the import a second time onto the same card or destination, and do not format the card because the catalog looks complete. A repeated move writes to the card and destroys exactly the files a scan would still find there.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Deleting from a card never fills a recycle bin, so only a read-only scan remains. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT and FAT32 camera cards on macOS and Windows, exports for a one-time 50 EUR licence, and does not repair a half-written raw file.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The import is complete when the destination folder holds one file per exposure with the card's numbering unbroken, the catalog shows no missing photos, and opening the first and last frame of the shoot works in the develop module without an error.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Lightroom Classic workflow be recovered in this situation?+

Four import options behave in four different ways, and only one of them takes the photographs off the card. Which button was pressed at import decides whether a second copy exists, so that question comes before any search or scan. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not run the import a second time onto the same card or destination, and do not format the card because the catalog looks complete.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
