Ogg/Opus recording: find after an import failure

Where are Ogg or Opus recordings after a failed import?

Short answer

First search for renamed or converted copies: Opus recordings may appear as .opus, .ogg or .oga, and some importers transcode them to another format. Check destination, trash and project folders by recording time, then compare with the card; scan the unused card read-only only if the originals no longer appear there.

The situation

Ogg or Opus recordings is incomplete at the destination and no longer appears reliably on the source.

Nothing at the destination looks like the recording, and the card entry is gone too. Opus material travels under three extensions and is often transcoded on import, so the first question is not where the file went but under which name and format it arrived.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Importers that cannot handle Opus convert it to another format and store the result, sometimes deleting the source afterwards. A file recorded as .opus may sit at the destination as .ogg, as .oga or as an entirely different format, and a search restricted to one extension misses it. A conversion that failed midway leaves a short file that still opens.

Move, rename, catalog and delete-after-import steps can fail at different moments and leave source and destination in different states. For Ogg/Opus recording, this matters because Ogg pages, serial numbers and granule positions order compressed Opus packets

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Search the destination for opus, ogg and oga at once, and sort the results by creation time rather than by name.

  2. 2

Check the trash and the project or library folder of the importing application for files carrying the session date.

  3. 3

Play each candidate to the end and compare its duration with the length the recording device reports.

  4. 4

Only if the original is missing from the card as well, scan the unused card read-only and export to a third drive.

Avoid this now

Do not repeat the import while the failed attempt is still in place, and do not empty the trash before the comparison is done. A repeated conversion can overwrite the partial result, and converted copies often end up in the trash rather than in the destination folder.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 volumes and uncompressed images on macOS and Windows, after a free scan and with a 50 EUR export. A destination on APFS or ext4 is not covered, so material lost there comes back from the trash, a backup or a snapshot.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The import is complete when every recording exists once, opens without a codec warning and runs to its full length. Compare durations instead of file sizes: a conversion changes the size by design, while a duration that falls short of the original marks a transfer that stopped early.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT audio media be recovered in this situation?+

Nothing at the destination looks like the recording, and the card entry is gone too. Opus material travels under three extensions and is often transcoded on import, so the first question is not where the file went but under which name and format it arrived. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not repeat the import while the failed attempt is still in place, and do not empty the trash before the comparison is done.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The import is complete when every recording exists once, opens without a codec warning and runs to its full length.
