MXF OP-1a: recover after an interrupted recording

What can I do with professional MXF recordings after a recording interruption?

Short answer

Often the essence was written while the footer partition and index were not, so editing software rejects the clip. Make an untouched copy of the card before trying any in-camera restore or repair tool. Then rebuild only on a copy, using a reference clip recorded in the same MXF format and frame rate.

The situation

professional MXF recordings is missing, too short or unreadable after power loss, a card error or an unsafe stop.

The recording stopped before the camera could close the file, so the essence is on the card while the footer partition and the index that describe it never got written. Editing software reads that as a broken clip rather than a shorter one.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

An OP-1a file is closed by writing the footer partition and, in many workflows, the index tables that let a player seek through the essence. A power loss, a card error or an unsafe stop interrupts exactly that step. The picture and sound recorded until then are present, but no application can navigate them.

The payload may have been written before duration fields, indexes, directory entries or closing structures were committed. For MXF OP-1a, this matters because header partitions, essence, indexes and footer can be separated across a large extent

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Power the camera down, remove the card and refuse any in-camera restore that offers to fix the unfinished recording.

  2. 2

Clone the card, or take a full image of it, before a repair tool or editing application ever sees the original.

  3. 3

Record a reference take in the same MXF format and frame rate, so the rebuild has valid header and index values.

  4. 4

Rebuild on the clone, then keep the conformed result and the untouched original card image in two places.

Avoid this now

Do not let the camera write a recovery file onto the card, and do not let editing software rewrite the clip while importing it. Each failed repair attempt should start from a fresh clone, never from a file a previous attempt has already altered.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Writing a missing footer is repair work on a single file and outside the scope of File Recovery Hero, which recovers lost files from exFAT, NTFS and FAT media read-only. Use a dedicated MXF repair tool on a copy, and expect nothing beyond the point of interruption.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A rebuilt clip conforms without warnings, reports the timecode start you expect and lets you scrub to the point where the recording stopped. Check the audio tracks as well: a footer rebuilt with wrong values often shows the picture correctly while the sound drifts or disappears.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT production media be recovered in this situation?+

The recording stopped before the camera could close the file, so the essence is on the card while the footer partition and the index that describe it never got written. Editing software reads that as a broken clip rather than a shorter one. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the camera write a recovery file onto the card, and do not let editing software rewrite the clip while importing it.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A rebuilt clip conforms without warnings, reports the timecode start you expect and lets you scrub to the point where the recording stopped.
