MOV with a missing moov atom: recover after an interrupted recording
What can I do with QuickTime media with an incomplete closing structure after a recording interruption?
Short answer
Treat it as a repair case, not a recovery case: an interrupted MOV usually keeps its video data but lacks the moov atom that indexes it. Power the camera down, copy the card or file first, and run a repair tool on that copy, using an intact clip recorded in the same camera mode as reference.
The situation
QuickTime media with an incomplete closing structure is missing, too short or unreadable after power loss, a card error or an unsafe stop.
This is the case the format was never designed for: the recorder wrote video and audio continuously and then stopped before the final atom. The frames are on the card, but nothing in the file says how long the take is or where each sample starts.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
QuickTime keeps its sample tables in the moov atom, and many cameras write that atom only when a take ends normally. A dropped battery, a card error or an unsafe stop leaves the media data complete up to the cut and the file without a readable header. Camera and computer then show a clip of zero seconds, or none at all.
The payload may have been written before duration fields, indexes, directory entries or closing structures were committed. For MOV with a missing moov atom, this matters because a power interruption can leave the media payload without final sample tables
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Shut the camera down instead of pulling the card mid-write, then take the card out once all indicators are off.
- 2
Copy the file, or the whole card, to a disk before any other step, and treat that copy as the working material.
- 3
Record a reference clip in exactly the same camera mode, because a rebuild takes codec and timing settings from it.
- 4
Repair the copy, never the card, and store the result on a third drive so the untouched export stays available.
Do not accept the offer from the camera to fix the clip or the card, and do not keep filming on that card afterwards. A camera-side repair rewrites the file in place, and once the payload is overwritten there is nothing left for a repair tool to read.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
Recovery and repair are two different jobs. File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card and exports the file read-only; it does not rebuild a MOV, and nothing recovers footage the camera never wrote before the interruption. Scanning is free, exporting requires the 50 € license.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
The rebuild worked when the clip opens, runs to the point where the recording stopped and ends there cleanly. A take that is shorter than expected is normal; a take that plays a few seconds and then shows scrambled picture means the reference clip did not match the camera mode.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can QuickTime recording media be recovered in this situation?+
This is the case the format was never designed for: the recorder wrote video and audio continuously and then stopped before the final atom. The frames are on the card, but nothing in the file says how long the take is or where each sample starts. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not accept the offer from the camera to fix the clip or the card, and do not keep filming on that card afterwards.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
The rebuild worked when the clip opens, runs to the point where the recording stopped and ends there cleanly.
