MP4 with audio but no picture: recover after deletion

How can I recover recovered MP4 files that play audio only after deletion?

Short answer

First rule out a missing decoder: a recovered MP4 that plays sound but no picture can be HEVC footage in a player without HEVC support. Try a player that decodes it. If the picture is still absent, parts of the deleted video stream were likely overwritten; keep the card and an image of it untouched.

The situation

recovered MP4 files that play audio only no longer appears in its recording folder even though the storage device is still detected.

Sound without a picture does not automatically mean damage. The same file can play properly in one program and show nothing in another, because the audio codec is common while the video codec may be missing. Only when several players agree is the video data itself suspect.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

When a clip is deleted, its freed clusters are reused in whatever order the card sees fit. An audio track needs far less space than the picture, so a partly reused file often keeps a complete soundtrack while whole ranges of video samples now hold other data. The index still promises a video track that cannot be decoded.

Deletion can release a directory reference before later writes reuse every block that belonged to the file. For MP4 with audio but no picture, this matters because an audio track can remain readable while the video track or its sample mapping is damaged

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Leave the card out of the camera so the clusters still holding video samples are not written over during your tests.

  2. 2

Open the exported file in a second player with HEVC and 10-bit support before judging the picture to be missing.

  3. 3

Scan the card again read-only and export to a different drive, keeping the first result for comparison.

  4. 4

Compare the sizes of the two exports: a picture-free clip that is much smaller shows how much video data went.

Avoid this now

Do not run repair tools on a file whose video blocks were reused, and do not delete the first export while testing, because rewriting the container can cost you the audio as well. Every further recording on the card reduces what a second scan can still find.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media read-only and exports what is still on the card. It cannot replace video samples that other files have taken over, and it repairs no damaged single file; an export that could not be confirmed is marked .UNVERIFIED.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A usable result shows a picture in at least one player from the first frame onwards, with audio in step. Size gives another clue: a clip carrying both tracks is many times larger than a soundtrack alone, so an export near the audio-only size is no complete recovery.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can damaged MP4 video media be recovered in this situation?+

Sound without a picture does not automatically mean damage. The same file can play properly in one program and show nothing in another, because the audio codec is common while the video codec may be missing. Only when several players agree is the video data itself suspect. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not run repair tools on a file whose video blocks were reused, and do not delete the first export while testing, because rewriting the container can cost you the audio as well.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A usable result shows a picture in at least one player from the first frame onwards, with audio in step.
