SD Card Formatter: recovery after formatting
Can data survive Quick Format or Overwrite Format?
Short answer
After Quick Format often yes, after a completed Overwrite Format no. According to the SD Association, Quick Format resets the file-system management, while Overwrite Format also overwrites the user data area. Note which option ran and whether it finished, never format again as a test, and scan the unchanged card read-only.
The situation
The card is empty, but the selected formatting option matters.
The SD Association explains that Quick Format resets file-system management, while Overwrite Format also overwrites the user data area. Recordings may remain after a quick format. Once overwriting has completed, the replaced data cannot supply the original recording. Establishing which option actually ran is therefore the first step.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
Check existing screenshots, your recollection of the selected option and any available logs. Duration alone does not prove a quick format or complete overwrite. Record whether new photographs or copied files were added afterward, because those later writes may have replaced additional areas of the card.
The formatter's name alone does not reveal what happened to the recordings. Terms used by other cameras, such as Low Level Format, should not automatically be treated as equivalent to SD Card Formatter options.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Stop using the formatted card and document the chosen formatter option as accurately as possible.
- 2
Look for existing imports, backups or copies on the computer and any other storage devices used during the shoot.
- 3
For a quick or uncertain format, examine a stable supported source read-only, preferably through a preserved image.
- 4
Save usable candidates separately and check complete picture sequences and the duration of related video clips.
Do not start Overwrite Format as a repair step when recordings are missing. Formatting again does not improve recovery prospects. Do not attempt to recreate the previous state through new recordings or run write-speed benchmarks on the affected memory card.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
File Recovery Hero can examine a recognizable stable exFAT source or a supported raw image. It cannot undo overwriting and does not guarantee recovery after Quick Format. When the original content has been completely replaced, existing backups and other copies are the remaining places to search.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Confirm that discovered recordings belong to the period you need rather than a later test session. Inspect the actual content and complete readability instead of relying on a hit count. An interrupted overwrite may leave some recoverable items without preserving the entire sequence.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.
