DJI action-camera card appears empty

Why does my DJI action camera show no media?

Short answer

Usually a missing folder, a database problem or deleted exFAT entries hide the files, while the data itself may still be on the card. Remove it and check on a computer whether capacity still shows used space and which folders exist. Do not format in the camera; scan the card read-only for JPEG and MP4.

The situation

The device reports no files although the card was used.

A camera reporting no media is describing what it can read, not what the card contains. The usual causes are a folder the device no longer recognises, a corrupted media database, or released exFAT entries. Used capacity on a computer settles the question in seconds.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Action cameras keep an index of their own clips, and that index can fall out of step with the card after a sudden power loss, a card swap between devices, or a firmware update. The camera then shows an empty gallery even though the DCIM tree is full. The alternative is a genuinely damaged directory, which looks identical from the camera screen.

A missing folder, database issue, or deleted exFAT entries can hide supported JPEG or MP4 assets.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Take the microSDXC card out of the camera and read it on a computer, where the real folder tree and the used space are visible.

  2. 2

Compare used capacity with what you expect: gigabytes in use behind an empty gallery point to an index problem, not to lost footage.

  3. 3

If the folders are visible, copy everything off to a computer drive first; only scan read-only for JPEG and MP4 when they are truly absent.

  4. 4

Once the material is safe on another drive, put the card back and let the camera format it to rebuild a clean index.

Avoid this now

Do not accept the camera's offer to format the card while the footage is still only there. Do not keep filming to test the device either, and refuse any repair prompt the computer raises, because that rewrites the exFAT structures you may still need.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media without writing to them, which covers this card, but it does not rebuild a camera's media database or repair the device. If the card no longer mounts on a computer at all, software cannot reach it.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

You are done when every clip and photo you expected is on a computer drive, opens there, and adds up to roughly the used capacity the card reported. Check a few of the oldest and newest files, since a damaged directory tends to affect the most recently written material first.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can DJI action-camera microSDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

A camera reporting no media is describing what it can read, not what the card contains. The usual causes are a folder the device no longer recognises, a corrupted media database, or released exFAT entries. Used capacity on a computer settles the question in seconds. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not accept the camera's offer to format the card while the footage is still only there.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

You are done when every clip and photo you expected is on a computer drive, opens there, and adds up to roughly the used capacity the card reported.
