AIFF/AIFC: recover after a quick format

Can AIFF or AIFC recordings be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often yes, as long as nothing new was written: the quick format removed the directory, not the FORM, COMM and SSND chunks that hold the audio. Eject the card without a test take and scan it read-only. Recovered files may come back without original names, so identify takes by length, sample rate and channel count.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous AIFF or AIFC recordings is missing.

What the card shows now is a new, empty file system, not an empty card. The quick format wrote fresh directory structures over the old ones, while the FORM containers of the earlier takes remain in the data area with nothing pointing at them any more.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A quick format creates new bookkeeping and leaves the recorded blocks untouched. For AIFF and AIFC that means the audio can still be identified by signature, since FORM and SSND markers are recognizable in the raw data. What disappeared are the file names, the take numbers and the timestamps the directory held, so recovered material arrives anonymous.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For AIFF/AIFC, this matters because FORM, COMM and SSND chunks hold format parameters and audio payload

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the card right after the format instead of running the test recording most recorders suggest, and keep it out of the device.

  2. 2

List what the card held before: number of takes, their approximate lengths, and whether they were uncompressed AIFF or AIFC.

  3. 3

Run a read-only scan over the whole card through a reader, not over the newly created empty directory alone.

  4. 4

Export candidates to a different drive and sort them by length and sample rate to match them back to the take list.

Avoid this now

Do not format a second time, do not choose a full format, and do not record a few seconds to check that the card is fine. A full format writes over the data area, and each test take can consume the clusters an earlier recording still occupies.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

The exFAT card itself is within range for File Recovery Hero, with a free scan and a 50 EUR export to another drive. Names and folder structure cannot be restored from a formatted volume, and a card that received a full format is beyond any read-only scan.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Judge recovered files by their audio, since names and dates did not survive the format. The right take has the channel count of the session, runs for the expected number of minutes, and decodes without interruption; an AIFC that plays as noise lost its compression identifier or part of its payload.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT audio media be recovered in this situation?+

What the card shows now is a new, empty file system, not an empty card. The quick format wrote fresh directory structures over the old ones, while the FORM containers of the earlier takes remain in the data area with nothing pointing at them any more. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not format a second time, do not choose a full format, and do not record a few seconds to check that the card is fine.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Judge recovered files by their audio, since names and dates did not survive the format.
