AIFF/AIFC: find after an import failure

Where are AIFF or AIFC recordings after a failed import?

Short answer

First search the destination under every extension: AIFF and AIFC takes may appear as .aif, .aiff or .aifc, and some importers filter or convert them. Check the trash and project folders, compare file counts with the card, and scan the unused card read-only only if the recordings are no longer on it.

The situation

AIFF or AIFC recordings is incomplete at the destination and no longer appears reliably on the source.

The recordings are not where the import put them, and the card view no longer matches the session either. AIFF and AIFC travel under three different extensions, so an incomplete import often leaves the takes at the destination, filtered out of view rather than truly missing.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Importers move, convert and index in sequence. A take written as .aif can be saved as .aiff or converted to another format entirely, and an import filter that looks for one extension only will report nothing. Where the software was set to delete after import, the card entry disappears even when the destination copy never finished.

Move, rename, catalog and delete-after-import steps can fail at different moments and leave source and destination in different states. For AIFF/AIFC, this matters because FORM, COMM and SSND chunks hold format parameters and audio payload

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Search the destination drive for aif, aiff and aifc in one query rather than browsing folders, and include hidden import caches.

  2. 2

Check the trash and the project or library folder of the audio software for takes carrying the timestamp of the session.

  3. 3

Count the takes on the card against the ones at the destination so you know exactly which recordings are actually gone.

  4. 4

If takes are missing from the card as well, scan the unused card read-only and export the results to a third drive.

Avoid this now

Do not re-run the import with the delete-after-copy option still active, and do not reorganize the destination folder while files are missing. A second pass can overwrite a partial copy with an even shorter one and moves the evidence needed to tell the two sides apart.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card and exports what it finds after a free scan, for a one-time 50 EUR. Takes lost on a macOS system volume fall outside that scope, because APFS is not supported; there the trash, a backup or a Time Machine snapshot is the route.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Every take in the session list should exist once at the destination, open in an editor, and report the sample rate and channel count of the recording. Compare durations with the card: a file that plays for less time than the original is a truncated copy, however normal the folder looks.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT audio media be recovered in this situation?+

The recordings are not where the import put them, and the card view no longer matches the session either. AIFF and AIFC travel under three different extensions, so an incomplete import often leaves the takes at the destination, filtered out of view rather than truly missing. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not re-run the import with the delete-after-copy option still active, and do not reorganize the destination folder while files are missing.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Every take in the session list should exist once at the destination, open in an editor, and report the sample rate and channel count of the recording.
