sports production: recover after a failed drive handoff
What should I do when files disappear during the sports production handoff?
Short answer
Immediately stop copying and freeze all cards and drives. With many identical action cams, clip names repeat across cameras, so a handoff that merged them into one folder may have replaced files after a hasty Replace All. Reconstruct which camera position went to which drive, search by name and size, then scan the original cards read-only.
The situation
Media was handed to another editor or drive and is now missing from both expected locations.
Files that vanished between two people are usually still on one of the drives involved, under another name or in another folder. The urgent part is not searching but freezing: every drive that took part in the handover has to stop changing before the reconstruction starts.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
A handover moves rather than copies more often than anyone remembers, and a move that is interrupted leaves the material in neither place. Identical action cams number their clips from the same series, so pouring several cameras into one delivery folder offers a replace prompt that quietly overwrites the earlier camera. A drive that was ejected during the write finishes the job on neither side.
Move operations, duplicate filenames and destination assumptions can fail between teams. For sports production, this matters because the sports production combines several sources, takes and handoff steps that must be reconciled as a set
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Stop every copy, sync and cleanup job on both machines, then disconnect the handover drive and the original cards and label them by camera position.
- 2
Write down the sequence: who copied which folder, to which drive, with which tool and at what time; then search both drives for the missing filenames and sizes.
- 3
If the search comes up empty, scan the handover drive and then the original cards read-only, working from the copy rather than from the card whenever both exist.
- 4
Export the found clips to a third drive under camera-specific names, then hand over a written file list instead of a folder so the next station can verify it.
Do not repeat the handover to see whether it works this time, and never answer a replace prompt for a whole folder of similarly numbered clips. A second pass writes over the very blocks the first pass released.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
Overwritten clips cannot be brought back, because the replacement occupies the same blocks. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT and NTFS drives read-only and exports to another drive after a 50 EUR licence, but it cannot recover from a network share or a drive that no longer spins up.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
The handover is complete when both stations hold the same list of names and byte sizes, every clip carries the camera position in its name so no number repeats, and one clip per camera opens and plays through in the editing software.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can sports production cards and drives be recovered in this situation?+
Files that vanished between two people are usually still on one of the drives involved, under another name or in another folder. The urgent part is not searching but freezing: every drive that took part in the handover has to stop changing before the reconstruction starts. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not repeat the handover to see whether it works this time, and never answer a replace prompt for a whole folder of similarly numbered clips.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
