Sony XAVC S/HS: recover after a quick format

Can XAVC clips from M4ROOT be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often yes, as long as you have not filmed again. The format replaced the exFAT records and emptied M4ROOT, but the clip data usually stays until overwritten. A single test recording can land exactly on it, so eject the card at once and scan it read-only for the MP4 originals.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous XAVC clips from M4ROOT is missing.

After the format the card presents an empty root, and M4ROOT is gone with it. That directory tree was only bookkeeping: the XAVC clip data sits untouched in the data area and stays there until the camera records something new.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Formatting in the camera rewrites the exFAT structures and creates a fresh PRIVATE folder, which takes a moment and leaves the recorded blocks alone. What disappears is the mapping from clip name to clusters, so a scan has to identify each MP4 by its container structure; the CLIP and SUB separation is gone until you restore it yourself.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For Sony XAVC S/HS, this matters because originals, proxies and management files may occupy different M4ROOT locations

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the card immediately after the format; a single new take lands in the area the previous XAVC originals occupied.

  2. 2

Note the camera model, the XAVC S or XAVC HS mode, the frame rate and how many clips the card held.

  3. 3

Read the card in a card reader without writing to it, or take a full image and run the scan against that.

  4. 4

Save recovered clips to a different disk and sort the large originals away from the small proxies before you import them.

Avoid this now

Do not reinsert the card to check that the camera is working again, and do not let it recreate its folder structure. Even the management files a camera writes on insertion can overwrite an original take, and proxies alone are no substitute for the full-quality clips.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A quick format is survivable; a full format, further recording or a card with hardware trouble is not, and no read-only scan reaches data that is gone. File Recovery Hero also recovers files rather than folder trees, so the M4ROOT layout has to be rebuilt by hand.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Judge a result by playback, not by the file list: each recovered original should run at the resolution and frame rate of the mode you used and reach its expected end. A file that is suspiciously small is probably a proxy from SUB rather than the original.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Sony exFAT memory card be recovered in this situation?+

After the format the card presents an empty root, and M4ROOT is gone with it. That directory tree was only bookkeeping: the XAVC clip data sits untouched in the data area and stays there until the camera records something new. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not reinsert the card to check that the camera is working again, and do not let it recreate its folder structure.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Judge a result by playback, not by the file list: each recovered original should run at the resolution and frame rate of the mode you used and reach its expected end.
