ProRes MOV: recover after a quick format

Can ProRes recordings in MOV be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often, if no new take was recorded: a quick format rebuilt the file-system records, but the ProRes payload stays until overwritten. At ProRes data rates even a short test recording overwrites a lot, so eject the medium immediately. Scan it read-only and play every recovered MOV through to its expected end.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous ProRes recordings in MOV is missing.

A new, empty file system sits on the medium, but a quick format does not scrub the recorded material. Your ProRes takes are still in the data area. The clock is running only because anything you record now will land straight on top of them.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Formatting quickly means writing a fresh allocation table and root directory, a job of moments regardless of card size. The ProRes payload is left in place, but the sample tables that described it are gone with the old directory, so the scan must find each MOV by its atom structure and rebuild the boundaries from there.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For ProRes MOV, this matters because QuickTime sample tables must point to the complete high-bitrate ProRes payload

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the formatted medium straight away; even a ten-second test take at ProRes bitrates overwrites more than most compressed clips would.

  2. 2

List what was on the card before the format: number of takes, their approximate lengths and the ProRes flavour used.

  3. 3

Mount the medium read-only in a reader and scan it, or capture a full IMG image and search that copy instead.

  4. 4

Export to a spare disk with enough free space, then open each MOV in your editing software and play it to the end.

Avoid this now

Do not format a second time, and do not let the camera write its folder structure back onto the medium. Copying a file onto it to test that the format worked is just as damaging, because ProRes recordings occupy long, continuous areas.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Only a quick format leaves this much behind. If the medium was fully formatted, has been filmed on since, or is failing electrically, a read-only scan has nothing to work with, and File Recovery Hero cannot rebuild a ProRes file whose frames are gone.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A clean result carries the full length you expected and the ProRes flavour you shot in, and it scrubs without stalling in an editor. Watch particularly the last minutes: a take cut short by an overwritten section ends abruptly even though the beginning looks perfect.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT recording drive be recovered in this situation?+

A new, empty file system sits on the medium, but a quick format does not scrub the recorded material. Your ProRes takes are still in the data area. The clock is running only because anything you record now will land straight on top of them. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not format a second time, and do not let the camera write its folder structure back onto the medium.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A clean result carries the full length you expected and the ProRes flavour you shot in, and it scrubs without stalling in an editor.
