PCM WAV: recover after a quick format

Can PCM WAV recordings be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often yes, if you record nothing further: a quick format rebuilds the exFAT directory while the WAV audio remains until it is overwritten. Eject the card without a test take and scan it read-only. Recorders write takes beyond the 4 GB RIFF limit either as RF64 or as split files, so look for both.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous PCM WAV recordings is missing.

The format replaced the directory, not the audio. What changes is how you find the takes: without file names you identify them by header and content, and long sessions may show up either as RF64 files or as several split parts, because the RIFF format stops at 4 GB.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A quick format rewrites the exFAT management area and declares the card empty, while the sample data stays where it was. Recorders handle the RIFF size limit differently: some switch to RF64, others start a new file at the limit. After a format both variants turn up nameless, and one take can be spread over parts that must be put back in order.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For PCM WAV, this matters because RIFF, fmt and data chunks describe channels, sample rate and payload length

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the card without recording a test take and keep it away from the recorder until you are finished.

  2. 2

Note how your recorder handles long takes, whether it writes RF64 or splits files, and at which length.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only and export everything to a drive with space for the whole card contents.

  4. 4

Sort the nameless exports by length and recorded time, then join split parts in their original order.

Avoid this now

Do not let the recorder format or initialise the card again, and do not record a short take to check that it still works. Both write into the area holding your session, and a single new file can cut a long take in half.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads the formatted exFAT card read-only and exports complete files; the original names, folders and dates lived in the directory the format replaced. Takes that later recordings have covered are gone, and joining split parts stays a job for your editing software.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Each export should announce the recorder settings in its header, play without dropouts and end where the take ended. For a long session check the joins: the parts have to follow each other without a gap or a repetition, and an RF64 file should report its full length instead of stopping near 4 GB.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT recorder card be recovered in this situation?+

The format replaced the directory, not the audio. What changes is how you find the takes: without file names you identify them by header and content, and long sessions may show up either as RF64 files or as several split parts, because the RIFF format stops at 4 GB. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the recorder format or initialise the card again, and do not record a short take to check that it still works.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Each export should announce the recorder settings in its header, play without dropouts and end where the take ended.
