wedding film production: find individual missing takes
How can I locate individual missing takes from the wedding film production?
Short answer
Usually one camera or recorder is the gap: use the edit timeline to find the missing moment, such as the ring exchange from the second angle, then work out which card was in that device at that time. Check both slots and every backup copy before scanning only that card read-only.
The situation
Most of the wedding film production is present, but specific scenes, angles or tracks are missing.
Most of the wedding is there and a few specific moments are not, which narrows the cause sharply. A whole card failing looks different; single gaps come from one camera, one slot change or one folder that was copied only in part.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
With two or three cameras running, each moment exists more than once, so a missing take is really a missing angle: the ring exchange from the second body, the speeches from the static wide, the registrar audio from the lapel recorder. The gap usually maps to the card that was in that device at that minute, often one swapped mid-ceremony.
Partial deletion, a slot change or an incomplete folder copy can affect only one asset group. For wedding film production, this matters because the wedding film production combines several sources, takes and handoff steps that must be reconciled as a set
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Write down the exact minute of the missing moment from the timeline and the timecode of the clips on either side of it.
- 2
Work out from the card log which body and slot covered that minute, then set that card aside and leave it out of every camera.
- 3
Search every existing copy first: the second shooter's folder, the backup drive, the proxy folder and the camera's second slot.
- 4
If it exists nowhere, scan only that card read-only and export the recovered clips for that time range to the edit drive.
Do not keep shooting on the suspect card while you search, and do not delete the partial folder at the destination to copy it fresh. Deleting the incomplete version removes your only reference for which file names and time ranges are actually missing.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
Recovery reaches clips whose data still sits on a readable card. Once that card was reused for the next wedding, the missing angle is likely overwritten, and footage never recorded, because a body stopped or a slot was empty, cannot be produced by any scan.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Drop each recovered clip onto the timeline at its timecode and check that it closes the gap: the audio continues without a jump, the action matches the neighbouring angle, and the clip runs its full length instead of freezing partway.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can wedding film production cards and drives be recovered in this situation?+
Most of the wedding is there and a few specific moments are not, which narrows the cause sharply. A whole card failing looks different; single gaps come from one camera, one slot change or one folder that was copied only in part. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not keep shooting on the suspect card while you search, and do not delete the partial folder at the destination to copy it fresh.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
