Cameras · two Nikon camera cards
Nikon dual-slot card is incomplete
Why is one Nikon card missing part of the shoot?
Short answer
Often because the slot role says so: with overflow, the second card only receives images once the first is full, and with RAW primary, JPEG secondary each card holds a different format. Video goes only to the slot chosen as its destination. Check the role in the menu and compare filenames before treating the gap as deletion.
The situation
A secondary card contains fewer images or no matching video files.
A Nikon body decides slot by slot what gets written where. Under overflow the second card only begins to fill once the first is full, under RAW primary and JPEG secondary each card carries a different format, and movies go solely to the slot named as their destination.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
The usual outcome is a card that looks short of a session it was never asked to hold in full. Backup is the only role in which both cards should match frame for frame. With overflow the numbering simply continues from one card onto the next, and with a format split the frame numbers agree while the extensions differ. Menu setting and numbering together show whether anything is genuinely absent.
Backup, overflow, and RAW/JPEG split modes intentionally write different assets to each slot.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Open the role assignment for the secondary slot in the camera menu and write down what it was actually set to.
- 2
Check separately where movie recording was directed, since that destination is chosen independently of the stills role.
- 3
List the file numbers and extensions present on both cards and lay the two lists next to each other.
- 4
Only where a card lacks files its role demanded should you scan it read-only from a reader and export elsewhere.
Do not reformat the apparently incomplete card to make the pair look consistent, and do not copy files from one card onto the other. Both wipe out the evidence of what each slot did, and reformatting an overflow card discards the only copy of the later part of the shoot.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
Software cannot create a second copy the camera never made, so an overflow or split configuration leaves nothing to recover. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT and FAT cards read-only and exports to another drive; it does not read camera menus and cannot help with a card that fails to mount.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
The session is complete when both cards together cover the whole frame number range without an unexplained gap, in the combination the roles predict. Where backup was active, compare a few frames from each card: matching numbers and matching pictures confirm the pair, and a missing counterpart is real loss.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can two Nikon camera cards be recovered in this situation?+
A Nikon body decides slot by slot what gets written where. Under overflow the second card only begins to fill once the first is full, under RAW primary and JPEG secondary each card carries a different format, and movies go solely to the slot named as their destination. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not reformat the apparently incomplete card to make the pair look consistent, and do not copy files from one card onto the other.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
The session is complete when both cards together cover the whole frame number range without an unexplained gap, in the combination the roles predict.
