Nikon 4K clip unfinalized after recording stopped

Can a Nikon 4K clip be recovered after power loss?

Short answer

Often in part: most of the 4K footage may already be on the card, but the camera could not write the final container metadata. Recover the clip from the untouched card or its image to another drive, then remux or repair a copy only. Trust the result once it plays for the full recorded duration.

The situation

The last MP4 or MOV take is absent or unplayable after an interruption.

The last take of a 4K session often exists as data without existing as a file. The camera streams picture and sound to the card throughout the recording and writes the closing container information only when you stop it properly, which an interruption prevents.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Power loss, an exhausted battery or a card pulled too early all cut the process at the same place. The video blocks reached the card in sequence, but the index telling a player where each frame begins was never committed, so the take either fails to appear at all or opens as zero length. What is missing is the description, not the picture, provided nothing has been written since.

The camera may not have written final container metadata even though media blocks reached the card.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Do not switch the camera back on with the card inside; take it out and read it through a card reader.

  2. 2

If the interruption came from the card rather than the battery, make an uncompressed image first and work from that.

  3. 3

Scan read-only for the container the camera records, MP4 or MOV, and export the extent of the last take.

  4. 4

Copy that export, then let a remux or repair tool work on the copy while the first file stays as it came off the card.

Avoid this now

Do not ask the camera to fix the recording, do not format the card, and never overwrite the untouched export with a repaired version. Those original bytes are the only material a second attempt has to work from, and repair tools each handle a broken container in their own way.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Repair depends on the media data lying in one piece and on the frames having genuinely reached the card. File Recovery Hero recovers the raw extent from exFAT media and uncompressed images read-only and finalises no containers itself; a card with hardware faults needs a laboratory.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Compare the running time of the repaired clip with how long the camera was actually recording. It should decode continuously, hold audio in sync and reach the end without stalling. Losing the final seconds is normal; a clip stopping minutes early means part of the extent was not recovered.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Nikon 4K recording card be recovered in this situation?+

The last take of a 4K session often exists as data without existing as a file. The camera streams picture and sound to the card throughout the recording and writes the closing container information only when you stop it properly, which an interruption prevents. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not ask the camera to fix the recording, do not format the card, and never overwrite the untouched export with a repaired version.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Compare the running time of the repaired clip with how long the camera was actually recording.
