MXF with sidecar files: recover after a quick format

Can MXF clips with XML and metadata sidecars be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often the MXF clips can be found, but small XML and metadata sidecars are harder to identify once the directory has been rebuilt. Eject the card without recording. Scan it read-only, recover the media first, and be ready to import clips individually if the original card structure cannot be restored.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous MXF clips with XML and metadata sidecars is missing.

The card reports itself as empty because its directory was replaced, not because the clips were erased. Essence blocks stay readable, but the folder hierarchy that named each MXF and tied it to its XML descriptor no longer exists on the volume.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A quick format writes new allocation structures in a couple of seconds and leaves the data area alone. Recovery therefore works from file signatures: MXF essence has a distinctive header a scanner recognizes, while an XML sidecar looks like any other small text file. That asymmetry is why media comes back named by size and order rather than by take.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For MXF with sidecar files, this matters because some NLE workflows rely on clip lists, XML or directory context in addition to readable essence

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Take the card out of the camera before any test shot; a single new recording writes a fresh card structure over the old one.

  2. 2

Write down which camera and card format produced the material, and how many clips and roughly how much footage should turn up.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only and recover the MXF essence first, since it is the part a signature scan identifies reliably.

  4. 4

Export to a separate disk, rebuild the folder tree by hand if the camera structure is gone, and import clips individually where relinking fails.

Avoid this now

Do not let the camera re-initialize the card to make it usable again, and do not run a file-system repair to bring the old folders back. Both write new management data over precisely the area where the old descriptors and clip lists used to live.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Scanning finds files, it does not resurrect a card database. File Recovery Hero handles exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 volumes and raw images read-only, not APFS, HFS+ or encrypted cards, and it repairs no damaged file. Scanning is free; export needs a 50 € license.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A recovered clip counts as good when it plays end to end and reports the duration you expect from the shoot. Match the count against the clip numbers you noted. If the editor still refuses a file that plays fine in a media player, the missing piece is metadata, not picture.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can professional exFAT card structure be recovered in this situation?+

The card reports itself as empty because its directory was replaced, not because the clips were erased. Essence blocks stay readable, but the folder hierarchy that named each MXF and tied it to its XML descriptor no longer exists on the volume. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the camera re-initialize the card to make it usable again, and do not run a file-system repair to bring the old folders back.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A recovered clip counts as good when it plays end to end and reports the duration you expect from the shoot.
