M4A/AAC recording: recover after a quick format

Can M4A or AAC recordings be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often yes, if the card has not been reused: a quick format leaves M4A and AAC data in place until new recordings overwrite it. Eject the card and scan it read-only. A recovered M4A plays only if its moov index came back with it, so an unopenable result usually points to a missing index.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous M4A or AAC recordings is missing.

The card is empty on the surface only. Quick formatting replaced the file system, while the M4A and AAC data from the previous session still lies in the data area, including the moov box that decides whether a recovered container can be opened at all.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Recovery after a format works by recognizing structures in raw data. An M4A begins with an ftyp box and carries its mdat payload alongside the moov index, which together allow a complete file to be reassembled. Fragmentation is the risk here: if index and payload sit far apart, a partly overwritten card can yield audio without a usable index.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For M4A/AAC recording, this matters because M4A uses ISO-BMFF metadata while raw AAC uses a different frame structure

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Remove the card from the device before it writes anything to the freshly formatted volume, and put it aside.

  2. 2

Note how many recordings were on the card, how long they ran, and which app or device produced them.

  3. 3

Scan the entire card read-only through a reader, letting the search cover the data area rather than the new directory.

  4. 4

Export everything found to another drive and open each file, sorting the openable ones from the index-less ones.

Avoid this now

Do not format again, skip any full format, and do not test the card with a short recording. A full format writes over the data area, and a new file can land on the moov box of an old take, turning a fully recoverable container into unreadable audio data.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card and exports results for 50 EUR after a free scan. It restores neither file names nor folder structure from a formatted card, and it does not reconstruct an M4A index; that needs a repair tool and a reference file from the same source.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A good result opens directly in a player, states a duration close to what you noted and runs through without a jump. A file of plausible size that no player accepts holds audio without its index, which is a repair case rather than proof that the recovery failed.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT audio media be recovered in this situation?+

The card is empty on the surface only. Quick formatting replaced the file system, while the M4A and AAC data from the previous session still lies in the data area, including the moov box that decides whether a recovered container can be opened at all. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not format again, skip any full format, and do not test the card with a short recording.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A good result opens directly in a player, states a duration close to what you noted and runs through without a jump.
