M4A/AAC recording: recover after an interrupted recording

What can I do with M4A or AAC recordings after a recording interruption?

Short answer

Usually repair, not recovery, for M4A: an interrupted M4A typically lacks its moov index and needs repair on a copy, with a reference recording from the same app or device. A raw AAC stream has no such index and normally plays up to the break. Copy the file first either way.

The situation

M4A or AAC recordings is missing, too short or unreadable after power loss, a card error or an unsafe stop.

The recording broke off and the container was never closed, which for an M4A usually means the moov index was never written. The audio itself lies in the file as mdat payload, but nothing describes how the samples are ordered, so players report a damaged or empty file.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Many devices write the index after the payload, at the end of a take. A power loss therefore leaves a file that contains minutes of AAC audio and no map for it. A raw AAC stream in an ADTS file has no index to lose and simply plays up to the break, which is why identifying the format decides how much work this case takes.

The payload may have been written before duration fields, indexes, directory entries or closing structures were committed. For M4A/AAC recording, this matters because M4A uses ISO-BMFF metadata while raw AAC uses a different frame structure

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Power the device down properly, take the card out and start no further recording in the same folder.

  2. 2

Copy the damaged file to a computer drive and keep the card version untouched for a second attempt.

  3. 3

Make a short reference recording with the same device and the same settings, on a different card.

  4. 4

Repair the copy with a video or audio repair tool that takes the reference file as the template for the index.

Avoid this now

Do not let the device repair or format the card after the failure, and do not overwrite the damaged file with a retake. A repair on the device often discards the unclosed file entirely, and the payload it deletes is the audio a repair tool would need as its source.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

This is container repair, not recovery from the card, and it needs a repair tool plus a reference file from the same device. File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card and exports the files present on it; it does not build a missing index into a broken M4A.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A repaired take plays from the beginning to the moment the recording stopped, with sound and timeline in step and no fast-forward effect. Check the reported duration against the recording time: a file that ends far too early was rebuilt from only part of the payload.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT audio media be recovered in this situation?+

The recording broke off and the container was never closed, which for an M4A usually means the moov index was never written. The audio itself lies in the file as mdat payload, but nothing describes how the samples are ordered, so players report a damaged or empty file. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the device repair or format the card after the failure, and do not overwrite the damaged file with a retake.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A repaired take plays from the beginning to the moment the recording stopped, with sound and timeline in step and no fast-forward effect.
