File Recovery Hero/Guides/Video

Video · already exported MP4 or MOV file

Recovered video has sound but no picture

Is a recovered video with sound but no picture corrupted?

Short answer

Not necessarily: an MP4 or MOV container can hold a video codec your player does not support, such as HEVC, while the audio plays fine. Keep the export unchanged and test a copy in a player with broad codec support against an intact clip from the same camera. Only then consider a repair tool on a copy.

The situation

The audio plays while the video remains black.

Not necessarily. An unsupported codec or playback problem can resemble a damaged video stream. First check whether suitable playback software supports the codec and whether the file contains a recognized video stream at all. A complete examination is needed to distinguish playback trouble from missing or damaged picture data.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Compare the camera, recording mode and codec with an intact original. If that reference also fails in the same player, playback compatibility becomes a likely explanation. If only audio is detected in the recovered file, or decoding always stops at the same point, examine its container and contents more closely.

A file extension, container and video codec are different things. Two MP4 files can use different picture formats. A player may therefore play the audio while failing to handle the video stream inside the same container.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Duplicate the export on healthy storage and leave the original recovered file unchanged for comparison.

  2. 2

Play an existing intact reference clip with matching recording settings in the same playback application.

  3. 3

Use a suitable inspection tool to read the copy's detected streams, duration, resolution and codec information.

  4. 4

Check the entire video stream with a compatible decoder and record the positions of errors or missing pictures.

Avoid this now

Do not install unknown codec bundles or immediately convert your only copy. Conversion can produce a playable-looking output while skipping damaged sections. A visible thumbnail or audible soundtrack is not a substitute for checking the video stream itself.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero is not a video player, codec pack or importer for individual damaged clips. An existing export should be examined first. A new scan of a supported original source may produce other candidates, but it cannot replace picture data that has been overwritten.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Check frame sequence, resolution, duration and audio synchronization from beginning to end. Compare the scene with the expected content. Keep repaired or re-encoded results separate from the unchanged export and document any sections that were skipped, replaced or otherwise altered during processing.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can already exported MP4 or MOV file be recovered in this situation?+

Not necessarily. An unsupported codec or playback problem can resemble a damaged video stream. First check whether suitable playback software supports the codec and whether the file contains a recognized video stream at all. A complete examination is needed to distinguish playback trouble from missing or damaged picture data. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not install unknown codec bundles or immediately convert your only copy.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Check frame sequence, resolution, duration and audio synchronization from beginning to end.

Preserve what remains.

Check the source first, then choose the appropriate next step.

Scan for free first, then decide.
