high-frame-rate MP4: recover after a quick format

Can slow-motion or HFR MP4 clips be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Usually yes, if the card was not reused: a quick format only rebuilds the file system and leaves the high-frame-rate footage in the data area. Eject it without a test shot and scan read-only. If a recovered clip suddenly plays at normal speed, it is not damaged; set its playback rate in the editor.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous slow-motion or HFR MP4 clips is missing.

The card is not empty, only newly indexed. A quick format writes fresh exFAT structures and leaves the slow-motion footage where it was, which is why a scan can still reach it as long as nothing was filmed since. Playback speed is a separate question.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Formatting quickly replaces the directory and allocation table and never touches the data area. Recovered HFR clips therefore arrive intact, including the capture rate stored in the file. What such a clip does not carry is the slow-motion setting some cameras apply only on playback, which is why a recovered take can run at normal speed.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For high-frame-rate MP4, this matters because recording rate and playback rate can differ, making an incorrect duration look plausible

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the card without shooting a test clip, because a few seconds at a high frame rate cover a large area.

  2. 2

Note the camera mode that produced the clips and the playback rate the finished sequence should use.

  3. 3

Scan the formatted card read-only and export the clips to an external disk with space for files of this size.

  4. 4

Set the playback rate for each clip in the editor after the export, rather than converting the original file.

Avoid this now

Do not format the card again or let the camera prepare it for further use, and never treat a clip that plays at normal speed as broken. Re-formatting is a real loss; the playback speed is only a setting.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A quick format leaves the footage recoverable, a full format usually does not. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT media and raw images read-only, exports files unchanged and neither conforms nor repairs them. Scanning is free, export needs the 50 € license.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A good export plays end to end at the captured frame rate, with no dropped sections in the middle. The duration should match what the camera reported at capture, not the slowed length. Once conformed in the editor, the same clip runs longer and the motion stays smooth.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can high-speed exFAT card be recovered in this situation?+

The card is not empty, only newly indexed. A quick format writes fresh exFAT structures and leaves the slow-motion footage where it was, which is why a scan can still reach it as long as nothing was filmed since. Playback speed is a separate question. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not format the card again or let the camera prepare it for further use, and never treat a clip that plays at normal speed as broken.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A good export plays end to end at the captured frame rate, with no dropped sections in the middle.
