Recover deleted Fujifilm MOV clips

Can deleted Fujifilm MOV files be recovered?

Short answer

Yes, if the card has not recorded since: a scan can recover a MOV whose QuickTime boxes and full media data remain consistent. That includes clips skipped during ingest and later erased with the card. Scan read-only for MOV, export elsewhere and confirm streams, duration and a complete demux for each clip before deleting anything else.

The situation

MOV clips were erased or skipped during ingest.

A MOV is a QuickTime container: sample tables and offsets in one set of boxes, the picture and sound data in another. Both parts have to come back intact and consistent with each other before the clip is anything more than a file with the right name.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

The clips were either deleted in the camera or passed over during ingest and then lost when the card was cleared for the next shoot. Video is the most fragile thing to lose on a card, because a single MOV occupies a long contiguous run of clusters and the next recording tends to start in exactly that region.

The recovered file needs consistent QuickTime boxes and the entire media extent.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Stop recording at once and eject the card; a few seconds of new footage can cover a clip that ran for minutes.

  2. 2

Search your ingest volume and any editing project for the clips before scanning, because skipped files are often already on the computer.

  3. 3

Mount the card read-only through a card reader and scan the exFAT volume for MOV, allowing enough free space on the target drive for full-length clips.

  4. 4

Export each candidate to that separate drive and open it in a player that reports stream details, not only in a preview pane.

Avoid this now

Do not film a short test clip, do not let the camera format the card, and do not run a repair utility against the original. A recovered MOV should also never be exported back onto the card it came from, because that writes over its neighbours.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A read-only scan of the exFAT card returns the extents that still exist. It cannot rebuild a sample table whose data area was reused, and File Recovery Hero does not repair damaged video files. Clips recorded over by a later shoot are unrecoverable by software.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Play the clip from the first frame to the last and watch the counter reach the duration you expect. Video and audio must both be present and stay in sync near the end, where truncation shows first. A clip that stalls or drops audio halfway is only partly recovered.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Fujifilm exFAT MOV card be recovered in this situation?+

A MOV is a QuickTime container: sample tables and offsets in one set of boxes, the picture and sound data in another. Both parts have to come back intact and consistent with each other before the clip is anything more than a file with the right name. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not film a short test clip, do not let the camera format the card, and do not run a repair utility against the original.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Play the clip from the first frame to the last and watch the counter reach the duration you expect.
