Emergency · media folder and editing project

Files appear missing after a folder was renamed

Can renaming a media folder make files disappear from an editor?

Short answer

Yes, but only inside the editor: the project stores the old folder path, so assets go offline while the files stay on disk. Relink to the renamed folder, or rename it back, and confirm the file sizes match. A deleted-file scan is only warranted if the files are really missing in Finder or Explorer.

The situation

The operating system still has the assets, but the editor or catalog marks them offline after a rename.

Nothing was deleted here. The rename changed the path, and the project file still looks for the old one, so the editor reports the clips as offline while Finder or Explorer lists them exactly where they were put, with their full sizes intact.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Editing applications and photo catalogs store a reference to each asset, and most of them keep the folder path as part of that reference. Rename a folder and every reference below it breaks at once, which is why a whole bin goes offline in one step while the files themselves never moved a single byte.

Project files store paths that no longer match the new folder name.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Open the renamed folder in Finder or Explorer and confirm that the clips are listed there with their normal sizes.

  2. 2

Either rename the folder back to its old name or use the relink function of the editor and point it at the new folder.

  3. 3

Let the application reconnect the whole folder at once instead of picking single files, so no asset stays linked to the old path.

  4. 4

Save the project under a new version once everything is online again, and only then think about a recovery scan if files are truly absent.

Avoid this now

Do not run a recovery scan on a healthy drive because an editor shows clips as offline, and do not let the application replace the offline clips with new media. Reimporting or re-rendering over the same folder can overwrite the assets that are still perfectly intact.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

This is a link problem, not a data loss, so recovery software has nothing to contribute; only if the files are really gone from the folder does a scan make sense. File Recovery Hero then works read-only on exFAT, NTFS and FAT volumes, not on APFS or ext4.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The problem is solved when every bin item shows online, the timeline plays without offline placeholders, and a spot check of two or three clips opens the real media at full length. File sizes in the renamed folder must match what they were before.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can media folder and editing project be recovered in this situation?+

Nothing was deleted here. The rename changed the path, and the project file still looks for the old one, so the editor reports the clips as offline while Finder or Explorer lists them exactly where they were put, with their full sizes intact. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not run a recovery scan on a healthy drive because an editor shows clips as offline, and do not let the application replace the offline clips with new media.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The problem is solved when every bin item shows online, the timeline plays without offline placeholders, and a spot check of two or three clips opens the real media at full length.
