concert recording: recover after a failed drive handoff

What should I do when files disappear during the concert recording handoff?

Short answer

First lock down every card and drive from the venue and write down the chain: which crew member copied which camera or audio recorder to which drive, and when. Rushed load-outs after a show often end in interrupted moves or wrong destination folders. Search every drive by exact filename before scanning the original cards read-only.

The situation

Media was handed to another editor or drive and is now missing from both expected locations.

After a show, drives change hands quickly and under pressure, which is when moves get interrupted. Material absent from both the crew drive and the editor drive usually means a transfer deleted its sources before the copies were fully written to the destination.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Load-out is the worst moment for a data transfer: several people, one laptop, drives unplugged while the copy indicator is still moving. Add the size of concert files, which makes every transfer long, and folders named after camera positions that repeat between nights, and material can end up overwritten, half copied or on a drive nobody remembers.

Move operations, duplicate filenames and destination assumptions can fail between teams. For concert recording, this matters because the concert recording combines several sources, takes and handoff steps that must be reconciled as a set

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Stop every copy still running and disconnect all drives from the show, so nothing writes to them overnight.

  2. 2

Write down the chain: which position or recorder went to which drive, carried by whom, and at what time.

  3. 3

Search every drive by exact file name, including recycle bins, and check whether the venue cards still hold the originals.

  4. 4

Scan the drive that last held the missing files read-only and export the findings to a disk from outside the chain.

Avoid this now

Do not copy the show onto the same drive again to fix the gap, and do not let anyone reformat it because the transfer failed. Concert files are large, so a single repeated transfer can cover the deleted material completely within minutes.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Scanning covers drives that still mount and use exFAT, NTFS or FAT16/FAT32, plus uncompressed images of them; APFS and HFS+ drives are outside that range. On an SSD, deleted blocks are often released by TRIM at once and cannot be read back.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Go through the delivery per source: every camera position with its chapter files complete, the desk recording with its full channel count and length. Play the end of each set from the delivered files, and let the editor relink before the crew drive is cleared.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can concert recording cards and drives be recovered in this situation?+

After a show, drives change hands quickly and under pressure, which is when moves get interrupted. Material absent from both the crew drive and the editor drive usually means a transfer deleted its sources before the copies were fully written to the destination. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not copy the show onto the same drive again to fix the gap, and do not let anyone reformat it because the transfer failed.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Go through the delivery per source: every camera position with its chapter files complete, the desk recording with its full channel count and length.
