Recover data from an exFAT microSDXC card

How can I recover files from a microSD card?

Short answer

First power down the phone, drone or camera and remove the microSD card: the host may hide folders or push a format, but the card itself can be analysed separately unless the device encrypted it. Check its capacity and exFAT file system on a computer, scan it read-only and export to another drive.

The situation

Photos, clips, or recordings are missing from removable microSD media.

The host device and the card are two separate questions. A phone, drone or camera can hide folders, refuse to mount the card or push a format prompt while the card itself is intact ordinary exFAT storage that a computer will read without any of that interference.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Two conditions decide whether this works. If the host merely organised the files, removing the card and reading it elsewhere shows everything the device was hiding. If the host encrypted the card, as some phones do for adopted storage, the content is unreadable anywhere except on that device with its keys, and no scan changes that. Capacity and file system tell you which case you are in.

The host device may hide folders or offer formatting, but the card can be analyzed separately when it is ordinary unencrypted exFAT storage.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Power the host device down completely before removing the card, so nothing is written while the card is pulled out of the slot.

  2. 2

Read the card on a computer and note two facts: the capacity it reports and the file system named in the disk utility.

  3. 3

If it shows exFAT at its true size, scan it read-only for the formats you are missing rather than for everything at once.

  4. 4

Export the finds to the computer disk, then open a sample of each kind before the card goes back into the device.

Avoid this now

Do not accept the format offer the host device shows, and do not let a phone repair or reformat the card to make it usable again. Those prompts create a new file system and end the case before the card has even been looked at properly.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Encrypted cards stay closed: File Recovery Hero reads unencrypted exFAT, NTFS and FAT16 or FAT32 media and uncompressed images, on macOS and Windows. A card the reader cannot enumerate at its real capacity belongs in a data recovery lab instead.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The card is behaving if the disk utility shows the capacity printed on it and a file system the computer can name. Recovered files then have to open in their own applications from the destination disk, at full size, with the dates and dimensions you expect.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT microSDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

The host device and the card are two separate questions. A phone, drone or camera can hide folders, refuse to mount the card or push a format prompt while the card itself is intact ordinary exFAT storage that a computer will read without any of that interference. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not accept the format offer the host device shows, and do not let a phone repair or reformat the card to make it usable again.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The card is behaving if the disk utility shows the capacity printed on it and a file system the computer can name.
