Recover recorder audio from an exFAT SDXC card

How do I recover audio recordings from SDXC?

Short answer

Usually yes, if the recorder stops writing to the card: scan it read-only for the format selected in the recorder, such as WAV or BWF. Folder structure shows take order, but each file's own header decides whether it is usable. Check duration, channel count and a complete decode before trusting any take.

The situation

Supported audio takes are missing after deletion or transfer failure.

Audio takes are small compared with video, which works in their favour: they occupy few clusters and are less likely to be hit by later recordings. What decides their usefulness is the header, because a WAV without a correct length field plays as silence or not at all.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A WAV file starts with a RIFF header, canonically 44 bytes, that states sample rate, channel count and data length. Recorders write it when the take is closed, so a scan can find the audio data and still need that header. Files beyond the 4 GB RIFF limit are written as RF64 instead.

Recorder folders help with take order, while RIFF, AIFF, or compressed-audio structure determines whether each candidate is usable.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Switch the recorder off and take the card out before it can write a new session or a settings file.

  2. 2

Note the format the recorder was set to, WAV or BWF, plus sample rate and channel count, from its menu or the sound report.

  3. 3

Scan the exFAT card read-only for that audio format and let the search cover the whole capacity, not only the session folders.

  4. 4

Export to another drive and open each take in an audio editor that shows the waveform and the file properties.

Avoid this now

Do not record a test tone on the card to check that the recorder still works, and do not let it rebuild its project folders. Audio files are small enough that a single short new take can land exactly on the clusters of a missing one.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A take whose header was never written needs an audio repair tool that supplies the missing RIFF fields on a copy. File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT recorder card read-only and exports the audio it finds, but it does not rebuild headers or mend single damaged files.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Look at the waveform as well as the playback: a correct take has sound from the first second to the last, the duration the sound report lists, and the channel count the recorder was set to. Noise bursts or sudden silence mark clusters that belonged to another file.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT SDXC recorder card be recovered in this situation?+

Audio takes are small compared with video, which works in their favour: they occupy few clusters and are less likely to be hit by later recordings. What decides their usefulness is the header, because a WAV without a correct length field plays as silence or not at all. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not record a test tone on the card to check that the recorder still works, and do not let it rebuild its project folders.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Look at the waveform as well as the playback: a correct take has sound from the first second to the last, the duration the sound report lists, and the channel count the recorder was set to.
