Recover recorder audio after formatting an exFAT card

Can audio be recovered after a recorder card was formatted?

Short answer

Often yes, if the recorder has not recorded since: a quick format replaces the directory first, while older audio stays until new takes overwrite it. Do not record a test take. Scan the formatted card read-only for just the formats used in the lost session and check each take's length and playback.

The situation

WAV, BWF, MP3, or another supported audio format is missing after a quick format.

A quick format on a recorder card rebuilds the directory and the allocation table, nothing more. The takes themselves stay in place until new recordings claim the same clusters, so the decisive question is how much the recorder has written since the format, not how long ago it happened.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Most recorders offer only a quick format, which writes a fresh exFAT structure over the old one and leaves the audio payload where it was. What goes first is the mapping between take names and clusters, which is why the card looks empty while it is still largely full. A long session recorded after the format is the real threat, because continuous audio fills free clusters one after another.

The format replaces directory metadata first; later recordings determine how much older audio is overwritten.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Take the card out of the recorder now and do not let it write a test take to prove the card still works.

  2. 2

Note what the lost session consisted of: the audio format, roughly how many takes, and their approximate length, so the scan has a target.

  3. 3

Scan the formatted card read-only and select only the formats the session used, so the result stays readable instead of listing every fragment on the card.

  4. 4

Export the finds to a drive with room for the whole session and rename them by take order once each file has played through.

Avoid this now

Do not format the card a second time, do not choose a full format in the hope of a cleaner result, and do not let the recorder repair the card. A full format overwrites the audio you are trying to reach.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

How much survives depends entirely on what was recorded after the format, and nobody can tell you in advance. File Recovery Hero scans the card free of charge, so the result is visible before the licence decision arises.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Recovered takes from a formatted card rarely keep their original names, so judge them by content: the expected running time, the sample rate the recorder used, and clean playback from beginning to end. A take that stops abruptly halfway has met newer audio in its clusters.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can formatted exFAT recorder card be recovered in this situation?+

A quick format on a recorder card rebuilds the directory and the allocation table, nothing more. The takes themselves stay in place until new recordings claim the same clusters, so the decisive question is how much the recorder has written since the format, not how long ago it happened. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not format the card a second time, do not choose a full format in the hope of a cleaner result, and do not let the recorder repair the card.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Recovered takes from a formatted card rarely keep their original names, so judge them by content: the expected running time, the sample rate the recorder used, and clean playback from beginning to end.
