Nikon NEF files missing after formatting

Can Nikon NEF photos be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often yes, if nothing was shot afterwards: the camera format replaces directory metadata without immediately erasing older NEF data. Stop using the card now and scan it read-only for NEF together with the paired JPEGs. Treat a NEF as recovered only when it opens at full resolution, not when its small preview appears.

The situation

NEF and paired JPEG files vanished after in-camera formatting.

An in-camera format rewrites the file system, not the picture area. The card reports itself as empty because the fresh directory lists nothing, while the NEF files and the JPEG partners saved beside them still lie in what exFAT now counts as free space.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Nikon's format command writes new management structures and an empty DCIM within seconds; it does not walk the card sector by sector. Every NEF, far larger than a JPEG, therefore stays exactly where the camera originally placed it. Whether it can be brought back is now only a question of what has been written to that card since the format finished.

The format can replace directory metadata without immediately erasing every older RAW extent.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Put the camera aside without taking a single frame, remove the card and connect it through a reader instead.

  2. 2

Decide what you need back: the NEF files alone, or each NEF together with the JPEG the camera stored next to it.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only for NEF and JPEG at once, covering the whole volume rather than the newly created DCIM.

  4. 4

Export everything to a drive with room to spare and develop a sample of the NEF files before you stop.

Avoid this now

Do not format a second time hoping for a cleaner result, and do not power the camera on with the card inserted, because that writes a new folder structure. Repair software that corrects the file system is unwelcome here: the card needs reading, not putting back in order.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Anything overwritten since the format stays lost, and the original folder numbering went with the old directory. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT and FAT card volumes without writing to them; it does not mend a truncated NEF and cannot work with a card the operating system will not mount.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A NEF is recovered when a RAW converter opens it, shows the full sensor image and lets you move exposure and white balance as usual. The embedded preview alone proves nothing. Where you shot RAW plus JPEG, both files should return under the same frame number and match each other visually.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can formatted Nikon exFAT card be recovered in this situation?+

An in-camera format rewrites the file system, not the picture area. The card reports itself as empty because the fresh directory lists nothing, while the NEF files and the JPEG partners saved beside them still lie in what exFAT now counts as free space. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not format a second time hoping for a cleaner result, and do not power the camera on with the card inserted, because that writes a new folder structure.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A NEF is recovered when a RAW converter opens it, shows the full sensor image and lets you move exposure and white balance as usual.
