MOV with a missing moov atom: recover after deletion

How can I recover QuickTime media with an incomplete closing structure after deletion?

Short answer

Only partly: recovery can bring back the QuickTime media data, but a MOV that already lacked its moov atom stays unplayable until the index is rebuilt. Stop recording and remove the card. Scan it read-only, keep the recovered file unchanged, and repair a copy with a reference clip from the same camera mode.

The situation

QuickTime media with an incomplete closing structure no longer appears in its recording folder even though the storage device is still detected.

This is a deletion on top of an incomplete file. The QuickTime payload was recorded and then lost its directory entry, but the moov atom with the sample tables was never appended either, so a straight recovery returns data that no player will index.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A MOV is a sequence of atoms, and the one describing sample positions is normally written when recording ends. If a power interruption cut that step and the file was deleted afterwards, the card holds a payload with no reference and no map. On exFAT the blocks remain readable until a new take claims them, which is the only reason this case is still open.

Deletion can release a directory reference before later writes reuse every block that belonged to the file. For MOV with a missing moov atom, this matters because a power interruption can leave the media payload without final sample tables

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Take the card out of the camera as soon as you notice, and label it so nobody loads it back into a body.

  2. 2

Locate a complete MOV shot in the same camera mode, with identical codec, resolution and frame rate, before starting anything.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only with File Recovery Hero and export every QuickTime hit to a drive you are not recording on.

  4. 4

Duplicate the export and let a repair tool rebuild the atom structure on the duplicate, keeping the exported file as it came off the card.

Avoid this now

Do not open the recovered file in an editor and save it, and do not let a media application convert it to make it readable. Both write a new container around data that still needs its original byte order for a repair to succeed.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card read-only and recovers the file; rebuilding a moov atom is a task for a dedicated repair tool, and no tool restores frames that later recordings overwrote. Scanning is free, export needs the 50 € license.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Look at the exported size first; it should match the minutes you expected to have. Then check the repaired duplicate: it must open, report a duration, and play from opening frame to final frame without the picture freezing. Audio should run alongside the whole clip, not only the first seconds.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can QuickTime recording media be recovered in this situation?+

This is a deletion on top of an incomplete file. The QuickTime payload was recorded and then lost its directory entry, but the moov atom with the sample tables was never appended either, so a straight recovery returns data that no player will index. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not open the recovered file in an editor and save it, and do not let a media application convert it to make it readable.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Look at the exported size first; it should match the minutes you expected to have.
