Lightroom says the original file is missing

How do I find a missing original file in Lightroom?

Short answer

Usually it still exists under another path: the catalog records a folder that went stale after a rename, move or detached drive. Click the exclamation mark on the thumbnail, note the previous location and use Locate to relink the verified original. A preview is no full-resolution backup, so scan storage only if nothing turns up.

The situation

Lightroom can show a preview but cannot open the full-resolution original.

Lightroom can display a photograph it cannot open, because the preview it built during import lives inside the catalog while the original lives on a drive. A missing original therefore usually means the recorded folder path went stale, not that the file was destroyed.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Each catalog record stores the volume, the folder and the file name as they were at import. Rename the folder in Finder or Explorer, move the photograph into an archive, unplug the external drive or let a cloud service move it into a different structure, and the recorded path stops matching reality while the file is untouched.

The catalog path may be stale after a rename, move, or detached drive; the preview is not a backup of every original pixel.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Click the exclamation mark on the thumbnail and read the previous location Lightroom shows; write down the full path and the file name.

  2. 2

Search every attached drive, archive disk and backup for that exact file name before assuming anything was deleted.

  3. 3

Use Locate to relink the file once found, and tick the option to find nearby missing photographs so siblings relink at the same time.

  4. 4

If it exists nowhere, scan the card or drive it was imported from read-only and export the original to a new folder.

Avoid this now

Do not export the preview as a substitute and delete the catalog record afterwards. A standard preview is a reduced JPEG rendered for the screen, a smart preview is a compressed DNG, and neither carries the full sensor data you would need for printing or a serious edit.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Relinking happens inside Lightroom and needs no scanner. If the original really is gone, File Recovery Hero can read an exFAT, NTFS or FAT16/FAT32 source, but it cannot recreate a RAW file from a catalog preview or read an APFS photo library.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Open the relinked photograph in the Develop module and zoom to one to one. The pixel dimensions in the metadata panel should match your camera's sensor, and the file size should sit where a full RAW file sits, not where a preview would.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Lightroom catalog and original-photo drive be recovered in this situation?+

Lightroom can display a photograph it cannot open, because the preview it built during import lives inside the catalog while the original lives on a drive. A missing original therefore usually means the recorded folder path went stale, not that the file was destroyed. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not export the preview as a substitute and delete the catalog record afterwards.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Open the relinked photograph in the Develop module and zoom to one to one.

Stop! Your files aregone.Back!

Scan for free first, then decide.
