Recover GoPro MP4 files after formatting

Can GoPro video be recovered after formatting the card?

Short answer

Often partly, if the GoPro has not recorded since: older MP4 data stays until new capture overwrites it. Long recordings are split into chapters of at most 4 GB, and each chapter is recovered as its own file. Remove the card, scan read-only for MP4 and list which chapters of every take came back.

The situation

Chaptered MP4 recordings disappeared after a quick format.

A quick format on a GoPro card rebuilds the exFAT administration and leaves the recorded video where it lies. One complication is specific to this camera: long takes are split into chapters of at most 4 GB, so a single recording returns as several separate MP4 files.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

The card was formatted in the camera or on a computer, usually to clear a card error or to start a clean shoot, and the DCIM folders went with it. The video extents themselves are intact until new capture overwrites them. Because chapters of one take were written back to back, a short new recording can damage several chapters of the same session at once.

Older extents can remain until new capture overwrites them, while the chapter sequence still needs reconstruction.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Take the microSDXC card out of the camera now and leave the camera switched off, so nothing new is written after the format.

  2. 2

Write down which takes were on the card and roughly how long each ran, because that tells you how many chapters to expect.

  3. 3

Mount the card read-only in a reader and scan the full exFAT volume for MP4, without opening the freshly created folders.

  4. 4

Export to a drive with room for the whole card, then group the recovered chapters into takes by duration and timestamp.

Avoid this now

Do not record a test clip to check that the camera survived the format, and do not format a second time. Even a few seconds at high bitrate covers a large area. Leave the card out of the camera until the export is finished and checked.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

The original filenames that tied chapters to a take lived in the directory the format replaced, so the grouping has to be rebuilt by hand. Chapters already overwritten cannot be recovered, and File Recovery Hero exports what it reads but does not join or repair video files.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Take each recording in turn and count the chapters: their durations should join into the length of the original take with no missing middle. Play the join points, because that is where a truncated chapter shows. Files that stop after a few seconds were caught by the format boundary.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can formatted GoPro exFAT microSDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

A quick format on a GoPro card rebuilds the exFAT administration and leaves the recorded video where it lies. One complication is specific to this camera: long takes are split into chapters of at most 4 GB, so a single recording returns as several separate MP4 files. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not record a test clip to check that the camera survived the format, and do not format a second time.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Take each recording in turn and count the chapters: their durations should join into the length of the original take with no missing middle.
