media file signature scan: use after formatting

How does media file signature scan help after a quick format?

Short answer

Often it finds what directory-based methods miss: a signature scan looks for recognizable file starts in the data area, so it does not need the directory a quick format replaced. Original names and folders are usually lost, and endings or fragmentation still need checking. Write nothing to the formatted card before scanning.

The situation

Old folders are gone while the newly formatted source appears ready to use.

After a quick format there is no directory left to consult, which is exactly the situation a signature scan is built for. It walks the data area looking for recognisable file starts, so it can find recordings the fresh, empty directory does not mention at all.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

What comes back depends on how the files were laid out. A recording written in one continuous run can be read from its start to its end without any bookkeeping, while a clip split across distant areas is only followed until the first gap. Names and folder structure are lost, because they lived in the directory the format replaced.

New file-system records and older payload blocks can coexist until later writes reuse them. For media file signature scan, this matters because signatures locate possible starts while endings, fragmentation and structure still need validation

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Keep the formatted card out of every device that writes, including phones and cameras that create folders automatically on insertion.

  2. 2

Select the recording formats of the camera that produced the footage, so candidates stay limited to plausible material.

  3. 3

Scan the whole card read-only and export every candidate to a separate drive, accepting that names will be generic.

  4. 4

Sort the exports by size and capture time afterwards, rebuilding the shoot order that the lost folder structure used to carry.

Avoid this now

Do not restore a backup onto the formatted card and do not use it for a short test recording before scanning. Both fill the free space where the older material still lies, and after a quick format that free space is the only place worth searching.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Original filenames, folder paths and camera-set dates do not return from a signature scan, and fragmented clips often end early. File Recovery Hero exports unconfirmed results as .UNVERIFIED and repairs no broken container, so a clip missing its moov section needs a repair tool on a copy.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Judge the yield by content, not by the file list: a photo must open at the camera resolution, a clip must play to the duration its container claims, and the end of a long recording matters more than its first seconds. Duplicates and partial hits are normal here.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT source or image be recovered in this situation?+

After a quick format there is no directory left to consult, which is exactly the situation a signature scan is built for. It walks the data area looking for recognisable file starts, so it can find recordings the fresh, empty directory does not mention at all. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not restore a backup onto the formatted card and do not use it for a short test recording before scanning.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Judge the yield by content, not by the file list: a photo must open at the camera resolution, a clip must play to the duration its container claims, and the end of a long recording matters more than its first seconds.
