Camera memory card recovery with format-specific validation

What matters when recovering a camera memory card?

Short answer

Three things matter: select only the formats your camera recorded, keep the card structure intact, and validate each recovered file completely. JPEG, RAW, video, proxies and sidecars follow different container rules, so a correct filename proves nothing. Open photos at full resolution and play clips to the end after export.

The situation

A mixed card may contain JPEG, RAW, video, proxy, and sidecar files from one shoot.

A camera card is a mixed medium, and that decides the work. JPEG ends with a defined marker, RAW follows a maker-specific layout, video needs a complete container, and a sidecar is worthless without the file it describes. A recovered name proves none of that.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

One shoot can leave five kinds of file in the same DCIM tree. Photos come as JPEG and as the camera maker's RAW, video as MP4 or MOV, often with a low-resolution proxy beside it, plus small metadata sidecars. Each family fails differently: a truncated JPEG still shows a preview, a video without its complete moov area will not open at all.

Each file family has different end markers, container rules, and confidence limits; a filename alone is insufficient.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Take the card out of the camera and keep it out; the next frame written can land in the clusters you need.

  2. 2

List the formats the camera actually records, including the RAW extension of that brand, and select exactly those before the scan starts.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only, and keep whatever folder context the scan reports; the DCIM path tells you which shoot a file belongs to.

  4. 4

Export to another disk and check each family separately: photos in a viewer at full size, clips in a player, sidecars against their media.

Avoid this now

Do not judge the result from the thumbnail grid of a file browser. Those previews are read from embedded miniatures or from a system cache, so a badly truncated RAW and an intact one look identical until you open the full image.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Fragments that no longer form a complete file cannot be assembled into one, and File Recovery Hero recovers files rather than repairing them. Exports it could not fully confirm are marked .UNVERIFIED, which is a signal to check that file before relying on it.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Judge each format by its own test. A JPEG must decode to its full pixel dimensions, a RAW must open in the maker's converter, a clip must play to the last frame with sound, and a sidecar must still name a file that exists in the export.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT camera memory card be recovered in this situation?+

A camera card is a mixed medium, and that decides the work. JPEG ends with a defined marker, RAW follows a maker-specific layout, video needs a complete container, and a sidecar is worthless without the file it describes. A recovered name proves none of that. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

Do not judge the result from the thumbnail grid of a file browser.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+
