Broadcast Wave/BWF: find after an import failure

Where are BWF recordings with production metadata after a failed import?

Short answer

First search by timecode and roll, not by file name: DAWs and conform tools can rename or relink BWF takes on import, so a take may exist under another name. Check destination, trash and project folders against your sound report, and scan the unused recorder card read-only only if the originals are gone.

The situation

BWF recordings with production metadata is incomplete at the destination and no longer appears reliably on the source.

Search by timecode and roll rather than by file name. Conform and DAW routines rename BWF takes on import, so a take that appears to be missing may already sit in the session under a name nobody recognises, with its original identity still inside the file.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Post-production tools copy takes into their own media folders, rename them to a project scheme and write their own references. If the import broke off, some takes arrive renamed, some half copied and some not at all. Since the file name no longer carries scene and take, the gap shows up only when the session is compared with the sound report.

Move, rename, catalog and delete-after-import steps can fail at different moments and leave source and destination in different states. For Broadcast Wave/BWF, this matters because bext, iXML and timecode metadata may matter alongside the PCM payload

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Stop the import and list every take on the card with its size, timecode start and length from the report.

  2. 2

Search destination, trash and DAW media folder by timecode and duration instead of by file name.

  3. 3

Copy the takes that are genuinely missing again from the card and put them in the media folder before relinking.

  4. 4

Relink the session and confirm that each clip carries the timecode the edit expects from the report.

Avoid this now

Do not clear the recorder card because the session looks complete: a renamed take can hide a missing one. Do not let a conform tool rewrite metadata in the imported files while takes are outstanding, because that removes the timecode you are searching by.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media read-only and recovers takes that are gone from the recorder card; renamed or relinked files at the destination are a matter for your search and your sound report. Copying from the card stays the first choice while it holds the originals.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Everything is in place when each entry in the sound report has one file with the right timecode start, the right length and audio that plays to the end. If the session points to a take whose file is shorter than the report says, the import stopped mid-transfer and the card copy replaces it.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT field recorder card be recovered in this situation?+

Search by timecode and roll rather than by file name. Conform and DAW routines rename BWF takes on import, so a take that appears to be missing may already sit in the session under a name nobody recognises, with its original identity still inside the file. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not clear the recorder card because the session looks complete: a renamed take can hide a missing one.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Everything is in place when each entry in the sound report has one file with the right timecode start, the right length and audio that plays to the end.
