Comparison
Stellar alternative for camera cards
Of all the comparisons on this site, this is the closest one: Stellar aims at the same people we do.
The short answer
Same audience, different cut.
By the vendor's own account, Stellar Photo Recovery addresses memory cards, cameras, hard disks and SSDs, lists a long set of RAW formats from the major camera brands, recovers video and audio, reads BitLocker-encrypted drives and comes in several editions; up to ten files can be recovered free of charge. That is the same use case File Recovery Hero serves. The difference is not the goal but the cut: File Recovery Hero covers fewer kinds of device, verifies every candidate against the format structure instead, and is sold as exactly one edition.
01 / Fit
When Stellar fits better
Because both programs tackle the same job, this list matters more than usual. In these cases you will get further there and not with us.
- Your data is on an iPhone or an Android device — there are separate products for that; we do not read phones.
- The drive is encrypted with BitLocker and you have the password.
- You want to recover documents, mailboxes or databases alongside photos.
- Your footage is not deleted but damaged and needs repairing — there is a separate product for that.
- Your drive is formatted as HFS+, APFS or FAT32.
- You want ten files back for free first and to decide afterwards.
02 / Difference
What actually differs
The comparison below lists only properties the vendor documents itself. Prices are deliberately left out of the table because they change and differ by edition.
Both programs show you something before you pay. The difference lies in what is checked afterwards: Stellar describes a preview of the photos, videos and audio files found, ahead of recovery. We additionally verify technically — every candidate is demuxed and decoded before it counts as confirmed.
| Property | Stellar Photo Recovery | File Recovery Hero |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Photo and media recovery, many device types | Media recovery from camera cards |
| Operating systems | Windows and macOS | macOS and Windows |
| File systems | FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, APFS | exFAT, NTFS, FAT16/FAT32 and uncompressed images |
| Encrypted drives | BitLocker documented | Not provided |
| Product structure | Several editions and companion products | One edition, all features included |
| Free of charge | Recover up to ten files | Scan and preview, rescue with a licence |
| Verification before success | Preview ahead of recovery | Demuxing and decoding, .UNVERIFIED |
03 / Editions
The question of the right edition
Stellar offers its photo recovery in several editions — Standard, Professional and Premium — alongside separate products for video repair, phones and data erasure. For a house with a broad catalogue, that is a sensible structure. It does, however, ask you for a decision before you know what your case actually needs.
With us that question does not arise, because there is nothing to choose: one edition, all features, paid once, valid for ten years for the major version purchased, two devices. That is not a judgement about tiered products, just a different answer to the same question.
What you see before you pay matters more than the structure anyway. Stellar lets you recover up to ten files free of charge; with us the full scan and the preview run free, and the licence is only needed for the export.
04 / Verification
How to tell that a clip is genuinely complete
With photos it is simple: a JPEG either displays or it does not. With video it gets murky — and that is where we come in.
An MP4 or MOV from a camera card can start perfectly and still end in the middle. So we demux the container and decode the tracks across the full runtime. Only then does a file count as confirmed; everything else is exported with the .UNVERIFIED extension and kept all the same.
You do not have to take our word for it. The recovery lab holds a disclosed test image with checksums, on which you can work through the same verification step by step.

Common questions
Does Stellar not cover more than you do?
In device breadth, yes. Phones, encrypted drives, documents and mailboxes are in that catalogue and not in ours. We are limited to camera cards and media, and in return we verify every candidate before we report it as a success.
Do you recover RAW files from cameras?
Yes. The app knows the common RAW formats — among them CR2 and CR3, ARW, NEF, ORF, RAF, RW2 and DNG — plus JPEG, HEIC, TIFF and PNG. For video it is MP4, MOV and MXF; for audio, WAV, FLAC and M4A among others.
What happens to my licence after ten years?
The licence runs for ten years from confirmed payment, for the major version purchased. It is not a subscription, nothing renews automatically, and nothing is charged.
Can I try both programs one after the other?
Yes, as long as neither is installed on the affected card. Take an uncompressed image and run the attempts on that — then a failed attempt costs you nothing but time.
