Comparison
Disk Drill alternative for camera cards
Broad coverage against narrow specialisation — both have their place.
The short answer
The difference is breadth against focus.
Disk Drill is a general-purpose tool for macOS and Windows with broad file-system coverage. File Recovery Hero deliberately covers exFAT, NTFS, FAT16/FAT32 and uncompressed images, but verifies every candidate against the format structure. If your drive is neither exFAT nor NTFS nor FAT16/FAT32, Disk Drill is the more suitable choice.
01 / Fit
When Disk Drill suits you better
- Your device is formatted as APFS, HFS+ or ext4.
- You want to examine an internal hard drive or SSD rather than a camera card.
- You need one tool for many different device types in a household or business.
- You are looking for documents, archives or system files rather than media.
02 / Differences
What differs factually
The comparison below states publicly documented properties only. Prices are deliberately omitted because they change, and there are no measurements of our own here.
| Property | Disk Drill | File Recovery Hero |
|---|---|---|
| Operating systems | macOS and Windows | macOS and Windows |
| File systems | Broad | exFAT, NTFS, FAT16/FAT32 and uncompressed images |
| Scope | General-purpose data recovery | Photos, video and audio |
| Licence model | Vendor-dependent, several variants | One-time, ten years, two devices |
| Verification before reporting success | See the vendor's documentation | Demuxing and decoding, .UNVERIFIED |
| Export lock on the source | See the vendor's documentation | Built in, cannot be switched off |
03 / Choosing
The question that comes before the comparison
Before comparing tools, establish your source's file system. That single fact decides more than any feature list: a tool that does not evaluate your file system will not help you, and one that does is already ahead.
If your source is an SDXC or microSDXC card from a camera, drone or recorder, it is very likely exFAT. Then comes the second question: is a hit list enough for you, or do you need confirmation that a long clip really is readable across its full duration?
Do not install a recovery program on the affected device and never export to the source. Where possible, work on an uncompressed image rather than directly on the card.

Common questions
Is broader coverage not always better?
Only when you need it. For an exFAT camera card, support for ext4 brings no advantage. What matters is what happens with your specific device and your file formats.
Can I use both tools one after the other?
Yes, if you work on an image. Create one uncompressed image and run as many tools against it as you like, without stressing the card again.
Why do you not list prices?
Because prices and promotions change frequently and a comparison would go stale. Our own price is fixed: 50 euros once, for ten calendar years on two devices.
