SD card recovery after DiskPart clean

Can DiskPart clean on an SD card be undone?

Short answer

Not with an undo command: DiskPart clean removes the partition information, but recording data may remain, while clean all writes zeros to every sector and leaves nothing behind. Do not create a partition or format the card. Image it first, then use a partition recovery tool on that image or ask a recovery lab.

The situation

The card shows unallocated space after running clean.

There is no simple undo button. The key distinction is clean versus clean all: clean removes partition information, while clean all writes zeros to every sector. Recording data may survive clean. Fully overwritten sectors no longer contain the originals that a recovery scan would need.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Preserve any available command-window history and note the selected device's model, size and connection. Establish whether a new partition, format or copy followed the command. Keep the investigation tied to that physical device, because drive letters can change and are not reliable identifiers.

A missing partition is different from an empty photo folder. Without suitable partition information Windows cannot display the old volume, even when some recording data may still remain.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Stop setup attempts and decline requests to initialize the disk or format a new volume.

  2. 2

Record the commands and later actions without repeating the sequence as a test on the card.

  3. 3

For valuable recordings, have the entire stable readable device imaged to another drive before attempting reconstruction.

  4. 4

Examine the preserved copy with suitable partition-analysis tools and export discovered media to a separate destination.

Avoid this now

Never run clean again or create a replacement partition using guessed values. Repairing the original partition table is not required before preservation. An unfamiliar reconstruction command should not be tested on the only remaining source of the recordings.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero does not reconstruct deleted partition tables. It cannot directly solve this case without a recognizable exFAT structure. A properly prepared supported exFAT image may be examined later; content overwritten by clean all cannot be recovered from those sectors.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A partition becoming visible again does not prove complete recovery. Compare expected photo counts, clip sizes and recording periods. Open exported media fully, and document which parts of the device image were readable and which results contain only fragments.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can accidentally cleaned storage device be recovered in this situation?+

There is no simple undo button. The key distinction is clean versus clean all: clean removes partition information, while clean all writes zeros to every sector. Recording data may survive clean. Fully overwritten sectors no longer contain the originals that a recovery scan would need. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Never run clean again or create a replacement partition using guessed values.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+
